RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacists (CPs) are increasingly participating in family planning services (FPS) in different health systems but the underpinnings of effectiveness in these services remain poorly understood and rarely documented. Objectives This study examined knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of FPS among CPs and assessed the impact of an intervention on these indices. METHODS: A nonrandomized controlled trial was conducted using two equivalent groups (n = 61 each) of randomly-selected CPs in Southwestern Nigeria. Intervention comprised a training package for the intervention group followed by a 2-month monitoring of participants' practices. Pre- and post-intervention data were collected using validated questionnaire and analyzed using appropriate descriptive (frequency, percentages, mean) and inferential statistics including chi-square test to examine association between categorical variables, and t-test to compare differences between means at alpha level of 0.05 for all statistical tests. RESULTS: Pre-intervention knowledge of FPS in both groups was poor with no significant difference in their mean scores [t (120) = 0.34; p = 0.74]. Post-intervention, 79% of intervention group demonstrated good knowledge (controls remained poor), with significant difference in mean knowledge scores across the groups [t (120) = -33.59; p < 0.05*]. Pre-intervention attitude in both control (97%) and intervention group (95%) were negative. Post-intervention, 93% of intervention group exhibited positive attitude (controls remained negative), Mean difference 72.8 [t (120) = -77.21; p < 0.05*]. Preintervention practice scores were poor in control (92%) and intervention (90%) groups. Post-intervention, 83.6% of intervention group had good practice scores (controls remained poor), Mean difference 48.9 [t (120) = -31.0; p < 0.05*]. CONCLUSION: Pre-intervention scores for KAP of FPS were poor among respondents. All the indices were significantly improved by the study intervention. Policy reforms are recommended to train CPs in the provision of FPS for enhanced reproductive health services.

RESUMO

Application of pharmacoeconomic data for decision making in medicines management is still nascent in most developing countries. Yet, escalating medication costs amidst rising budgetary constraints call for widespread application of economic evidence to maximize available healthcare resources. This study was a descriptive cross-sectional survey of randomly-selected hospital pharmacists from secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities in Ogun State, Southwestern Nigeria, conducted between June and August 2019. A semi-structured questionnaire was used for primary data collection. Appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis at p < 0.05. Knowledge of pharmacoeconomic concepts was found to be still evolving (mean weighted average, MWA 2.07) among respondents while their ages and ranks had significant associations (P < 0.05) with their knowledge and attitudes. They had a fairly positive attitude toward pharmacoeconomic evaluations (MWA 2.997). Practice of pharmacoeconomic evaluations was inadequate (MWA 2.36). Appropriate policy action and targeted training are strongly recommended.

RESUMO

Drug utilization studies in developing countries is evolving. Rising medication cost for hypertensive patients is a major cause of noncompliance to therapy. The study was a cross-sectional drug utilization review involving outpatients in two purposively selected hospitals (secondary and tertiary) in Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria. Data and relevant information were obtained from the patients' medical records domiciled in the outpatients' hospital records department. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used at p < 0.05. Total medication cost to patients was USD$48,575; out of which antihypertensive medications accounted for 46% (USD$21,588) in two referral hospitals. Ramipril was the most prescribed in both hospitals. Generic drugs were cheaper than their branded alternatives. Study outcomes are beneficial for managing costs for hypertensive patients.

RESUMO

The aims of the study were to identify the types, determine the extent of community pharmacists' involvement, and evaluate the factors influencing their participation in public health activities in Nigeria. The study was a cross-sectional survey of randomly selected 130 registered community pharmacies. Pretested questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse data. Response rate was 94.9%. The study identified 31 types of public health activities which community pharmacists participated in. Their extent of involvement was highest in patient counseling (4.93 ± 0.25), personal hygiene (4.90 ± 0.37), maintenance of normal blood pressure (4.88 ± 0.32), and techniques for using vagina pessaries (4.85 ± 0.38). Lowest areas of involvement were elimination of smokeless tobacco use (2.27 ± 1.56), use of seat belts when driving (2.03 ± 1.46), and the need to live in a safe neighborhood (1.42 ± 0.53). Inadequate training (96%), lack of pharmacists' time (94.6%), inadequate personnel (92.3%), lack of patients' time (88.5%), lack of profit (85.4%), inadequate space in the pharmacy (82.3%) and inadequate patients' information (69.9%) significantly influenced their participation. The study concluded that community pharmacists would participate more in public health activities if the identified barriers are reduced.
